We're very pleased to share with you the 2013 Annual Report for the United States Fashion Industry Association (USFIA).
Of course, for most of 2013, you knew us as the United States Association of Importers of Textiles & Apparel (USA-ITA). One of our most important activities last year was the rebranding process, which kept us in close contact with our members. This was also one of the most rewarding activities, because we got to hear directly from members their vision for the future of the association.
This process was especially important since, in 2014, we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the association’s founding. In January 1989, nine forward-looking apparel retailers, brands, and importers joined together to create this association. The mission was to fight for the elimination of the global quota system–-a protectionist system that controlled the sourcing decisions for all textile and apparel companies.
We achieved that goal! And along the way, we built a reputation for working on behalf of textile and apparel companies to open markets and remove both tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade. We fought hard for duty-free preference programs and Free Trade Agreements. We worked closely with Customs and other regulatory agencies to support strong focused enforcement while looking out for the needs of member companies. Looking back, it has been an amazing 25 years—and throughout 2014, we’ll provide some retrospectives on these accomplishments and others.
