As new Members of Congress (all 94 of them!) settle into their offices, the trade community is atwitter with speculation about the prospects for trade liberalization in the 112th Congress. Will the sizable Republican Tea Party contingent support trade? Will the new Chairman of the House Trade Subcommittee push the Korea Free Trade Agreement? Will President Obama consider trade as a policy issue area ripe for bipartisan compromise? And, how active will the House Textile Caucus be in wake of the defeat of the Caucus' co-chair, Rep. John Spratt (D-SC)?
This is all so exciting! These are the issues that thrill us trade geeks with the turning of the new year, right alongside the eggnog and holiday presents. So, in no particular order, here are the big issues of the 112th Congress:
