Overview of New SOLAS Regulations

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted new regulations under the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) requiring vessel operators to load only packed containers with shipper-declared Verified Gross Mass (VGM) onboard their ships. The new regulations take effect July 1, 2016.

USFIA Customs Broker Partner OHL and Edward D. Greenberg, Principal at GKG Law, discussed the regulations and how to comply. Greenberg has represented his individual and trade association clients before a large number of federal agencies, including the Federal Maritime Commission, Surface Transportation Board, Federal Railroad Administration, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, DOT, Department of Justice, and various federal and state courts throughout the country. Among his corporate clients are major industrial rail shippers, oil companies, and numerous international freight forwarders.
