...Speaking at a U.S. Association of Importers of Textiles & Apparel symposium here late last month, called “U.S. Trade Policy: What’s New and What’s Next,” Hubert Wiesenmaier, executive director of the American Import Shippers Association, discussing ocean transportation development, noted big carriers have placed orders for larger ships that will allow for more cargo for each oceanic crossing.

“The new vessels are expected to replace 50 percent of the current capacity on the Asia to Europe trade,” Wiesenmaier said. “The Panama Canal is being widened to allow passage of the larger ships.”
