U.S. retail associations are urging the new U.S. Trade Representative to express “very strong support for the continuation of the trilateral North American Free Trade Agreement” and ensure any changes give companies time to adjust.

In a May 16 letter to Robert Lighthizer, the heads of the American Apparel & Footwear Association, the National Retail Federation, the Retail Industry Leaders Association and the U.S. Fashion Industry Association make a strident appeal for a  “seamless transition” to any new deal -- and they push Lighthizer to ensure the preservation of the hundreds of thousands of jobs they say NAFTA “directly supports,” as well as the elimination of duties it ensures.
